Washington State Parks is kicking off its 100th birthday celebration with events across Washington state. All events are free unless otherwise noted.

The Discover Pass ($30 annual or $10 daily) is required for vehicle access to Washington state parks and state-managed recreation lands.   Interpretive events

Washington state parks are filled with rich historical and cultural places, along with some of the most beautiful natural areas in the Northwest. Many parks offer a variety of educational opportunities for visitors to learn more about the culture, history and nature of the park and surrounding areas. Visitors may enjoy a campfire program, attend a junior ranger activity, explore a museum and experience a living-history presentation.

  Community and ongoing events

Washington state parks play host to a variety of unique events that connect communities to their state parks. Dance to music by a lake, explore festival booths, celebrate the birthdays of historic locations, soak in local art, gaze at stars or sing by the sea at a state park event. Folk and Traditional Arts in the Parks Program events, presented in cooperation with the Washington State Arts Commission, celebrate the rich heritage and culture found in Washington state.

Ongoing LeRoy’s Park Geocache: Experienced geocachers may search for a multi-cache at Cama Beach State Park. The multi-cache highlights the history of the area, including the popular 1930’s Puget Sound resort that was later transformed into a state park and the 1905 logging camp. Participants may play by visiting www.geocaching.com and entering the describing number GC3BGCQ. Registration with the site required for participation.

Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2013 ESVA Centennial State Parks Challenge: Walk across Washington with the Evergreen State Volkssport Association (ESVA) in celebration of the State Parks centennial year. The year-long program challenges participants to walk through Washington state parks in the seven ESVA regions. The program is open to everyone and limited to the first 100 participants that register. Registration begins at the Edmonds Turkey Trot on Nov. 24, 2012. Registration is $10 per person and includes a challenge stamp booklet, a logo hatpin and a pencil. Those who complete the challenge will receive a State Parks Centennial 2013 flag patch. Daily through Labor Day Fun with the Friends of Moran: Kids activities are offered daily at the Summit Learning Center. Explore the 90 gallon tank filled with Kokanee fish from Moran Creek Hatchery, compare arm length to a bald eagle’s wingspan, discover migration cycles of the rough skinned newt and play matching games. Dec. 8 and 9 Deception Pass Dash: The Northwest’s premier winter paddlesports event returns to for a seventh year. Open to all human-powered crafts, the six mile course takes paddlers through Deception Pass. Participants must wear a personal floatation device and carry a whistle. Registration and fee required for participation. Register before Nov. 25 at a discounted fee. Have a kayak, stand-up paddleboard, outrigger, pedalboat, surfski or other human-powered vessel and are ready for a winter challenge? Dec. 8 Deception Pass 25K and 50K: See dramatic standing waves and whirlpools in Deception Pass, mountain views, sea bluffs and dense old-growth while racing through Deception Pass State Park. The annual 25K and 50K trail run by Rainshadow Running snakes through single track trails on both the north and south sides of the Deception Pass Bridge. Cama Star Night: Discover the night sky with local astronomers at Cama Beach State Park. Learn how to use a telescope and, weather permitting, see the moon and the stars. If weather is overcast, a slideshow about constellations and their position in the sky will be presented. A shuttle will be available to take visitors to the event location within the park.

Eastside Audubon Birding Walk: Lake Sammamish State Park has a variety of ecosystems in an urban setting, resulting in a wide assortment of feathered denizens. The Eastside Audubon invites everyone to a morning birding walk to view the many species of birds residing around Lake Sammamish. The walk is approximately 2 to 3 miles in length. Participants will meet just inside the main entrance in the left-hand parking area. It is recommended walkers wear rainproof clothing and dress in layers as trails may be muddy. Last Chance Run: Join the Skagit Runners in an end of year run through Larrabee State Park. Register for the half and full marathon beginning at Fairhaven Park Pavilion and continuing along the Interurban trail in the mountains around Larrabee State Park. The race concludes at the Clayton Beach parking area within Larrabee State Park. Registration and fee required for participation. Those who finish the race will receive a Last Chance coin. Polar Bear Plunge: Dive into 2013 during the annual Polar Bear Plunge at Moran State Park. En masse, participants will plunge into the frigid waters of Cascade Lake in recognition of the first day of the new year. This year’s theme is “I Survived!” The plunge begins promptly at 11 a.m. Participants are suggested to arrive early. Sponsored by the Orcas Island Rowing Club. First Day Hikes, Fort Townsend: Ring in 2013 by connecting with nature at a First Day Hike in one of many Washington state parks on New Year’s Day. Discover the natural beauty of Washington as part of a national effort to share stewardship for natural, cultural and recreational resources. The First Day Hikes kick-off a year-long celebration of State Parks’ centennial year.

The hike at Fort Townsend State Park begins at the bulletin board in the first day-use parking lot. The easy hike is open to participants age 5 years and older (younger children may be carried). Friendly dogs are allowed and must be on-leash at all times. Participants are suggested to take along comfortable walking shoes, an all-weather jacket and a water bottle. Guided Winter Walk: Everyone is invited to participate in a free guided trail walk through Cama Beach State Park by the Friends of Camano Island Parks. The walk is moderately paced and takes place rain or shine. Participants will meet at Ivy Road and Dry Lake Road junction and walk from the northeast section of the park to the new Marine View Loop Trail. The walk continues to the Bluff Trail and the Old Entrance Trail, a total distance of approximately 2.7 miles. Participants are recommended to wear weather appropriate clothing and study shoes or boots. Please leave pets at home. A shuttle returning visitors to the parking area is available after the hike. 2013 Birch Bay International Marathon - 45th Annual Event: Test your endurance by racing along Birch Bay, with views of the Cascade Mountains, White Rock and the Canadian Gulf Islands. The paved course is mostly flat, with a one very short steep climb. Racers will start and finish the race within Birch Bay State Park. This certified race is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon (code WA 06002 BL). Registration and a fee are required for participation. Registration closes Feb. 12. Feb. 23 Snow Goose Festival: Learn how to identify waterfowl of the Saratoga Passage and view an extensive collection of mounted birds at the Snow Goose Festival in Cama Beach State Park. Port Townsend Chamber Music Festival – Baroque Offerings: The West Coast’s finest Baroque musicians gather at Fort Worden State Park to perform gems of the era. Headlining is concertmaster of San Franscisco’s Philharmonia Baroque, Elizabeth Blumenstock. The concert features works by Purcell, Blow, Bieber, Schutz, Bonporti, A.Scarlattis and Handel. The week-long program is a total immersion residential experience for young artists. The Historic Boathouses and Fishing Resorts of Puget Sound: The Center for Wooden Boats celebrates the story of unique regional small watercrafts, their builders and places to rent them in the exhibit "Fish On! The Historic Boathouses and Fishing Resorts of Puget Sound." The exhibit tells the story of the rise of salmon sport fishing and the numerous boathouses and Puget Sound resorts that supported the activity. Youth Fishing Derby at Cama Beach: Children of all levels of fishing experience may try their hand at saltwater fishing. The free event is open to children 15 years of age and younger. Anglers must take along their own equipment. The event begins with the program, "How to fish in saltwater," which teaches beginning anglers fishing basics. Rowboat rentals are available. Presented in partnership with The Center for Wooden Boats and the Cama Beach Foundation. The Discover Pass not required for vehicle access to the event.

June 22 Deception Pass Challenge: Bike, swim and run through Deception Pass State Park during the second annual triathlon fitness challenge. CamOcean: Learn about healthy waters and oceans in a day of family fun. The annual CamOcean Worlds Ocean Day festival returns to Cama Beach State Park. The event features interactive activities for all ages, including storytelling, beach walks, the Salmon Fun Run, Maritime Music Festival and arts and crafts with recycled materials. Beach Art Festival: Create drawings or sculptures using inanimate objects found on the beach as part of the second annual Cama Beach State Park beach art festival. Each individual or team will receive a 25-foot-long piece of rope to define their work space on the beach. Artists will gather art materials from the beach (only shells, rocks and driftwood) and construct their pieces within their section of rope, creating 2D or 3D works of art without leaving the shore. Aug. 31 Discover Sail Cam Isle Regatta: Celebrate the art of small boat sailing with activities for all ages. Participate in sailing races along Saratoga Passage or view different type of small boats from the shore.
