Park Ranger 2

Location: This register will be used to fill vacancies as they occur throughout the state.
Salary: $3,150 - $4,131 per month

Duties
Under general supervision, performs various duties involved with administration, development, maintenance, resource stewardship, visitor services, and law enforcement of a state park or park area. All Park Rangers hired after November 19, 1999 are required to carry a firearm as part of their duties.

  • Successfully complete a background investigation that includes, but is not limited to: personal history, driving record, credit rating, and employment. Applicants will be required to sign releases of information and shall not have access to any investigative materials and files. Background investigations are part of the pre-employment selection process and are not a commitment to employment.
  • Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Willing to obtain a current American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate or equivalent.
  • Possess sufficient physical stamina and dexterity to work arduous manual tasks over extended periods.
  • Willing to work Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and long or irregular hours.
  • Must not have any felony or misdemeanor convictions involving theft, crimes of violence (including domestic violence), larceny, moral turpitude, controlled substances, or fraud.
  • A driving record that indicates a disregard for rules and regulations is disqualifying. Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, hit and run, reckless driving, or an accumulation of driving violations will be evaluated and may disqualify you.
  • Able and willing to arrest and handle suspected violators.
  • Able to legally acquire and possess firearms and ammunition, as well as, willing to carry and use the firearms in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted (other than corrective lenses), drivers license.
  • Willing to not use or be in possession of illegal narcotics, controlled substances, and to submit to drug testing.
  • Willing to be free from excessive alcohol consumption and willing to submit to alcohol testing.


Special Notes:

  1. The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission has a union shop requirement. Any employee hired into a Park Ranger position must meet union shop requirements within 30 days of employment.
  2. This agency has a No Smoking Policy. Smoking will not be allowed indoors in State Parks facilities and buildings. Smoking will not be allowed in State Parks vehicles or in the pilot house and living quarters on State Parks vessels.
  3. The Essential Function of the position will be discussed with candidates at the oral interview. Essential functions include the minimum qualifications and primary duties on this announcement. Candidates are hired on a conditional basis; contingent upon candidates showing the ability to perform the essential functions, with or without accommodation.
  4. Overnight travel may be required to attend training.
  5. Applicants may be required to obtain the following licenses: Pesticide, Asbestos, Water Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, Hazardous Waste Handlers, and Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
  6. Applicants will remain on the register for one year. All applicants not hired within one year of placement on the register are required to reapply for consideration.

Pre-Job Offer Screening
All applicants who are not already Park Rangers with the Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission are required to pass the following before being added to the register:

  • Fitness Test - The General Population Single Standard Cooper Fitness Test (40th Percentile):

Push-Ups

- must complete 20 push-ups from the toes.

Sit-ups

- must complete 27 sit-ups in one minute.

Vertical Jump

- minimum of 15 inches OR Agility Run - must complete in 20.3 seconds.

Mile and a Half Run/Walk

- must complete in 15 minutes, 20 seconds.

300 Meter Run

- must complete in 72 seconds.

Bench Press

- must lift approximately 68% of body weight (one repetition).

If you do not pass all of the fitness test elements you may retake the test until you pass. All candidates who retake the test must take and pass all elements.

Completion of an approved law enforcement academy and on-going weapon qualification requirements.

Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelors degree with 24 quarter/18 semester hours in parks and recreation or a natural resource field (Anthropology, Archaeology, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Conservation, Ecology, Environmental Science, Forestry, Geology, History, Horticulture, Natural Resources, Outdoor Recreation, Park Management, Physics, Recreation, Wildlife, Zoology, or other related fields)

AND

One year of experience as a Park Ranger, commissioned law enforcement officer or equivalent experience in a natural resources field.

Experience as a Park Ranger, commissioned law enforcement officer or experience in a natural resources or outdoor recreation field will substitute year for year for education, provided that 24 quarter/18 semester hours in parks and recreation or a natural resource field have been attained.

If you have attended a law enforcement academy, please list this on the education section of the application form. A lapse in law enforcement training or employment of more than two years or an out-of-state academy may require that you attend additional law enforcement training.

Examination Procedure
Applicants who meet the minimum requirements and pass the exam will be notified by mail when and where to appear for the fitness test and psychological written examinations.

Candidates who pass the fitness test and the psychological examinations will be placed on the Park Ranger 2 eligibility list (register). Candidates will be contacted to schedule a job interview, based on the Availability Statement. Only those candidates who are selected for a position will be scheduled for the post-job offer screening.

Applicants may only take the psychological examinations, psychological interview, polygraph, medical examination or drug analysis once in a 12-month period.

Examination
The following examination is an evaluation of your experience and training. Type or write your responses to these exam questions on additional sheets of paper, numbering your responses to correspond with each item listed. Place your name on each sheet of paper and attach the sheets to your completed application. The raters will score only those responses that contain the requested exam information. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date of this announcement.

Education and Training

  1. List degrees you have attained. Specify whether Bachelor's or Associate's degree, where and when completed, and your major area of study.
  2. List any job-related continuing education courses you have completed (e.g., computer applications, supervision/management, parks and recreation, natural resource or environmental sciences, business or public administration, law enforcement, public speaking, interpersonal relations, maintenance, etc.) Specify course title, number of class hours completed, and where and when taken. Do not list agency-required courses.

Experience
For each of the following experience areas, document where you performed the activity by including your employer and dates employed in that capacity. You may reference your employer by listing the corresponding number from your application. Please be concise, but complete, in your answers. The evaluator will rate each question independently from the others.

  1. List up to six administrative duties you have performed. Examples may include office and accounting activities or other administrative duties performed as a Law Enforcement Officer. If you have produced a report, be sure to specify what type of report, OR if you have reconciled accounts, specify type of account.
  2. List any work-related experiences you have had using computers. Specify what you produced and what software applications you used.
  3. List specific supervisory activities for which you have been responsible (e.g., selecting, hiring, scheduling, evaluating, disciplining, writing corrective action plans, training, etc.) Include in your description the number of people you supervised, and whether they were employees, volunteers, community service workers or others.
  4. List up to five presentations or talks you have given. Include the type of group you addressed, the topic and purpose.
  5. List up to six maintenance-related activities you have led or projects for which you have been responsible. Do not list routine activities such as cleaning restrooms or mowing lawns.
