State Parks schedules public information meeting on estuary restoration proposal at Camano Island State Park
OLYMPIA –
Oct. 17, 2011 –
The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission announces a public information meeting and opportunity for the public to comment on a proposal to restore a saltwater estuary and lagoon at Camano Island State Park.
The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Cama Center at Cama Beach State Park, 1880 S.W. Camano Drive, Camano Island.
The Skagit River System Cooperative (SRSC) has asked Washington State Parks for approval to restore a saltwater estuary and lagoon at the popular park. The reason for the proposal is to add salmon rearing habitat to Puget Sound. SRSC has applied for a state salmon recovery grant to do a feasibility study and prepare design options. State Parks has supported the SRSC grant application provided the effort will not diminish the overall park experience.
At the meeting, State Parks staff will outline the history of the park’s development and historical landscape studies. Staff also will explain proposed project elements and will present grant conditions to balance recreation and lagoon-area restoration within the existing beach day-use and boat launch area of the park. State Parks also will share information about a review and decision process and will invite public comment about the proposal.
Driving directions to Cama Center: The park is west of Stanwood approximately 19 miles from the freeway. To get there, take Exit 212, off I-5. Turn west on State Route 532 and drive 5.75 miles toward Stanwood/Camano Island. Once in Stanwood, continue west 4.5 miles to the “Y” junction of East Camano and North Camano drives. Bear left onto East Camano Drive, which becomes Elger Bay Road. Just after Elger Bay Grocery, take a right onto Mountain View Drive. At the top of the hill, follow the road as it curves to the right and becomes West Camano Drive. The park entrance is on the left, approximately 1/2 mile beyond the curve. Enter the gate on the right just inside the entrance and proceed to the park welcome station, then follow signs to the Cama Center.
Members of the public will not be required to display the Discover Pass to attend the meeting.
