Other Power-Driven Mobility Devices

In March 2011, a new Department of Justice (DOJ) rule under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) went into effect. This rule allows the use of “other power-driven mobility devices” (OPDMDs) in public places by individuals with mobility disabilities.

The DOJ rule states that a public entity that has determined that reasonable modifications can be made in its policies, practices, or procedures to allow the use of OPDMDs should develop a policy that clearly states the circumstances under which the use of OPDMDs by individuals with mobility disabilities will be permitted.
