1805 – Going with the Current to the Ocean
In the homelands of the Nez Perce people, the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake
rivers was a major milestone for the Corps of Discovery's passage through the Northwest.
The Corps continued down the waters that would lead them to the Columbia River and ultimately
to their long-anticipated goal – the Pacific Ocean.
On Oct. 16, they made their first of many stops at a site that would some day become a
Washington state park.
The park – Sacajawea
State Park – is named for the Shoshoni Indian woman traveling with the Corps.
