Saint Edward Environmental Education and Research Center

St Edward EERC

This Environmental Education and Research Center project, a 2,300 SF tenant improvement in the historic Seminary Gymnasium Annex at St. Edward State Park, is considered substantially complete. The Annex is a one-story addition that recently served as Locker Rooms and Meeting Rooms.

The Annex gutted of interior walls and finishes, plumbing fixtures, electrical and mechanical systems, and re-constructed as an Environmental Education and Research Center. A new Park Office space will be built adjacent to the center. New windows, doors, a garage door, and a skylight were added at exterior walls and roof to allow daylight into the facility. The center contains an approximately 800 SF classroom serving students and adults of all ages, from Pre-K to college to adult learners. In addition, the learning center will use the 326 acres of Saint Edward State Park as a living laboratory and outdoor classroom.

This Architectural Consultant has also volunteered design skills to create an adjacent outdoor learning area that will be accessed from the new garage door.

Background information

Saint Edward State Park was formerly a seminary, and later a school that closed in 1976 due to declining enrollment. State Parks acquired the building and site in 1977. Several of the buildings were acquired by Bastyr College in 2005. An agreement between State Parks and Daniels Real Estate, LLC was made in 2017 and allows for the seminary building’s restoration. The former Saint Edward Seminary, now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, is set to open as an 82-room lodge and construction is underway. Part of this agreement allowed for the creation of an Environmental Education and Research Center (EERC).
