16-029 State Parks announces 2016 Waikiki Beach Summer Concerts series

Now in its 11th year at Cape Disappointment State Park

OLYMPIA – May 25, 2016 – The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission announces the schedule for the 2016 summer concert series at Waikiki Beach in Cape Disappointment State Park. The first concert is Saturday, June 11.

The free concerts are from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Waikiki Beach along Jetty Road near Ilwaco. Directions from Ilwaco to the venue are here: https://goo.gl/maps/uS1TPUVfbWA2.  The concert series first took place 11 years ago.

The schedule for summer 2016:

June 11—Jon Broderick and Jay Speakman
Original songs and poetry celebrating the commercial fishing industry.

June 25—Tara Stonecipher & The Tall Grass
Alt-country and new folk with vocal harmonies and melodic instrumentation.

July 9—Amanda Richards & The Good Long Whiles
An evolution of folk, ghost Western and 1970’s rock ‘n’ roll.

July 23—Champagne Sunday
Gypsy-punk rock with intimate tear-jerker and anthem foot-stompers.

Aug. 13—Lulu LaFever
Soulful roadhouse songwriting with pop jazz and juke joint swing.

Aug. 27—Ben Hunter and Joe Seamons
Pre-blues a cappella field hollers, fiddle, banjo and early jazz. Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and Washington State Parks Folk & Traditional Arts in the Parks Program.

The concerts are sponsored by the Friends of the Columbia River Gateway and other organizations.  From Waikiki Beach, which is technically on the Columbia River, concert goers can take in dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean. The concert series takes place in an outdoor amphitheater with limited seating. The amphitheater is near the beach with an excellent view of the mouth of the Columbia River and Pacific Ocean. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own seating, blankets and insect repellant, etc.

A Discover Pass is required for vehicle access to the concerts, unless participants are already camped in the park. The exception is the June 11 concert, which occurs on a state parks ‘free’ day, in recognition of National Get Outdoors Day. No Discover Pass is required on this day.
