[ARCHIVED] 14-072 Commission sets public meeting for interim trail plan at Miller Peninsula property

OLYMPIA – Nov. 10, 2014 – The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission announces a public meeting on a draft interim trail plan for the Miller Peninsula State Park property near Sequim.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at the Guy Cole Convention Center, 202 N. Blake Ave., Sequim. The meeting will be to gather public comment that will be considered in making recommendations to the agency director on a final interim trail plan. The meeting will include a presentation of the plan and discussion of project plans and future planning efforts.

Miller Peninsula State Park Property is a 2,860-acre undeveloped property located on the Miller Peninsula in Sequim. The property is managed from Sequim Bay State Park. It was acquired in sections in 1993 and 1994 from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources. Though the property is currently undeveloped, it is much used and much loved for its extensive trail network, access to beaches, gorgeous bluff vistas, mature forests and wildlife viewing.

In 2005 and 2006, the Washington State parks and Recreation Commission initiated the first stage of a six-year planning and development process for a proposed destination state park. The public was engaged through a public process for the development of a park vision, name for the property and menu of financially feasible uses and facilities on which to base future planning stages. Anticipated continued funding was not realized, and State Parks postponed the process. Currently the property lacks any sort of formal trail system or trail signage.

The interim plan is intended to designate appropriate trail uses and to guide management of the area until a more comprehensive plan is completed. A map of the draft plan is available online at http://www.parks.wa.gov/DocumentCenter/Home/View/4928.
