Overview: The 130-mile Columbia Plateau State Park Trail starts southwest of Spokane. Built on an abandoned railbed, the trail follows the Snake River south, ending near Pasco. For the work party, we will focus on cutting back encroaching vegetation from the trail. 

Project Description: From the trailhead, we will caravan down the Columbia Plateau Trail and stop along the way to cut back encroaching vegetation. We will make use of loppers, handsaws, pole saws, and brush cutters. 

Hiking Information: No hiking. After our safety briefing at the trailhead, we will load up in State Park vehicles to cruise down the trail to the worksites.

Planning Information:

  • No experience is necessary; we will provide the training and tools you need.
  • Expect to be physically active at your own pace for up to 5 hours on uneven terrain.
  • Please be on time and plan to stay for the entire duration of the event.
  • Recommended for ages 10 and older; under 14 must be accompanied by an adult and a parental consent form must be signed for anyone under 18.
  • We are unable to sign off on court mandated community service.

Things to bring:

Required:

  • Sturdy closed-toe shoes
  • Work gloves
  • Eye protection (glasses, sunglasses, or safety glasses)
  • Lunch and plenty of water
  • A pack to carry your personal gear
  • Discover Parking Pass (we can issue a day pass if you do not have one)

Recommended:

  • Long pants
  • Long sleeved shirt

Work gloves and eye protection will be provided but, if possible, we recommend bringing your own. We also will be providing tools but if you would like to bring your own, we will be using: handsaws, loppers, and pole saws.

Columbia Plateau First Day Hike

Join Interpretive Ranger Kara Frashefski on this family friendly First Day Hike along the Columbia Plateau Trail. This will be an out and back hike to the railroad underpass at Minnie Creek. Along the way, participants will have beautiful views of Fish Lake and plenty of opportunities to hear about the geology and history of the Columbia Plateau area. Snacks will be provided at the trailhead.
